Basic Info
Name:Revisiting all my CDs in alphabetical order
Location:Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
Bio
New profile, 3/19/06:

I started the [info]wholecollection project in November 2005, and it's going along slowly but surely. The basic idea is this: I'm listening to all of my CDs in alphabetical order and blogging about it. Sometimes I just write about the music, but my hope is that this project will be interesting even to people who haven't heard any of these CDs, so I'm also writing about more general issues of taste, snobbery, criticism, musical memory, emotion, style, structure, and the experience of listening -- except much less formal than you'd probably think from that description. In addition to that, there's an autobiographical aspect. Those of you who know me (which is almost all of you as of the time of this writing) can learn a bit more about my life from this blog, and those of you who don't can get to know me a little. People who don't know me are encouraged to add me to their friends lists! This journal is public for a reason. And all of you, whether you know me or not, are encouraged to comment. Tell me about your experiences of the same music, or similar experiences with different music, or whatever you want.

To give you all a point of reference for music you haven't heard, I'm posting links to free, legal downloads or sound clips whenever I can find them.

Finally, just to give you an idea of what you're in for: the genres best represented in my collection are indie rock, post-punk, avant-prog, and scored music from the Baroque through the present.

Some of the bands I've considered favorites over the course of my life include The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, The Olivia Tremor Control, Thinking Plague, Gentle Giant, Henry Cow, The Dismemberment Plan, Pere Ubu and Oingo Boingo. Right now (6/06) I'm especially interested in David Thomas and Two Pale Boys.

Some of the composers I've considered favorites include Bach, Hindemith, Prokofiev, Scarlatti, Bartók, Berio, Schoenberg and Beethoven. Right now (6/06) I'm especially interested in Louis Andriessen.

I also enjoy things in many other genres, from free jazz to hip-hop, but I don't necessarily own a ton of CDs in all of them. If you want to know more than that, you can see my complete CD list here.

New feature, 7/3/06: A table of contents!
